Located in Navasota, Texas, Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary has made its mission to provide exceptional lifelong sanctuary to non-releasable wolves and wolf dogs, while educating the public on these animals and providing conservation for their future generations. As their website states, SFWS was founded in 2002 by Jean LeFevre with a single wolf named Mystery and lots of help from her friends. Within their first year, they took in 5 more wolves and began educating the world about these amazing creatures. At the time of this blog, they currently house 13 animals.
You might ask what is the difference between a wolf and wolf-dogs. Simply put, a wolf is one of the largest members of the canine family and shares a common ancestor with domesticated dogs. Wolves are highly intelligent and have a playful demeanor within their pack. A wolf-dog is a hybrid of a wild wolf and domesticated dog. The wolves at SFWS are a selection of full-blooded wolves and hybrids of varying degrees. You can visit their website https://saintfranciswolfsanctuary.org/ to learn about each of their animals including McQuade, a wolf named by Chuck Norris.
We learned of SFWS from our niece, who graduated with a biology degree with the determination to become an animal keeper. She was blessed to be hired to work with these amazing creatures in 2022. We had the opportunity to visit her in Texas and to experience this amazing place for ourselves.
There are several tour options to choose from when visiting SFWS from the basic tour to experiencing Howl Night and spending the night camping on site. They offer educational programs to scout groups as well.
So if you ever find yourself near Navasota, Texas and you are an animal lover, make sure you take a tour of the Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary. We don’t think you will regret it!
See you on the road!
